Acne and weight training can go hand in hand. Here are some small changes that can help you stay acne free while you are weight training and still get big results. The main perpetrators in the exercise world and the acne connection is use of dairy or whey protein, soy protein, foods high in salt and iodides such as electrolyte drinks, “green” smoothie drinks/bars, whey protein smoothies/bars, and peanut butter. Any sort of stimulant inducing exercise pre-workout can also be a problem. I will also say any testosterone enhancing drugs, HGH, MACA root or anything that messes with natural hormones will also take its toll on acne prone skin. My suggestions to avoid consumption of these items. Its not hard to avoid most of these, find a substitute, and still have a weight training lifestyle with clearer skin.

I saw a post about The Rock’s daily meals and wanted to take one day into a routine that some people may follow in hopes of being lean, mean, muscle machine like The Rock. You can even modify other recipes to make them acne safe with my suggestions. He didn’t have a pre-workout listed, my suggestion is using coffee.

You also may have to play around with your protein powders, but after a while you will get the idea. Now let’s look at the Rock’s daily food journal below. I have put a strikethrough, the items that can and will aggravate acne prone skin. After the acne unsafe diet I will put an acne safe version, in it I will make suggestions in bold and italics, what you can substitute with.

 

DWAYNE JOHNSON’S DIET

Meal 1

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 2 cups oatmeal

Meal 2

  • 8 oz cod
  • 12 oz sweet potato
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal 3

  • 8 oz chicken
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal 4

  • 8 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 cup veggies
  • 1 tbsp fish oil

Meal 5

  • 8 oz steak
  • 12 oz baked potato
  • spinach salad

Meal 6

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • salad

Meal 7

  • 30 grams casein protein
  • 10 egg-white omelet
  • 1 cup veggies (onions, peppers, mushrooms)
  • 1 tbsp omega-3 fish oil

NOTES

► “I do cardio 4–5 a.m., then take 4–6 scoops of Optimum’s Amino Energy.”

► “After cardio I eat breakfast [Meal no. 1].”

► “After breakfast I hit the iron for 90 minutes.”

► “Post-workout I have 60 grams Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrowhey with 15 grams of glutamine.”

► “Thirty minutes later I consume 32 oz of Gatorade.

 

DWAYNE JOHNSON’S DIET THE ACNE SAFE VERSION!

Meal 1

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 2 cups oatmeal

Meal 2

  • 8 oz cod
  • 12 oz sweet potato
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal 3

  • 8 oz chicken
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal 4

  • 8 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 cup veggies
  • 1 tbsp fish oil

Meal 5

  • 8 oz steak
  • 12 oz baked potato
  • spinach salad

Meal 6

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • salad

Meal 7

  • 30 grams Egg White, Hemp, or Pea protein
  • 10 egg-white omelet
  • 1 cup veggies (onions, peppers, mushrooms)
  • 1 tbsp omega-3 fish oil  –Fish oils are great anti-inflammatories for acne prone skin

NOTES

I do cardio 4–5 a.m., then take GNC Pro Performance® Essential Amino Acids

► “After breakfast I hit the iron for 90 minutes.”

► Post-workout I have 60 grams Egg White, Hemp, or Pea protein with 15 grams of glutamine. Suggestion is  GNC Pro Performance® L-Glutamine Powder or acceptable substitute.

► “Thirty minutes later I consume (I prefer no electrolyte supplement but if you have to try Nuun Active Hydration, Electrolyte Enhanced Drink Tablets.)
